1996

Services for Independent Living began as Herefordshire Centre of Independent Living (HCIL) in 1996 when a group of disabled people started campaigning for a pilot Direct Payment scheme in Herefordshire.

1998

Since 1998 it has provided a Direct Payment Support Service and currently supports over 200 people in receipt of direct payments.

2004

In 2004 we established our home support agency, called Independent Living at Home.

2019

We added the SIL homecare team in 2019, they focus more on shorter domiciliary care visits. As an already established agency in Leominster they were a great addition to our team.

2021

The Direct Payment Support Service began managing their first package Personal Health Budget (PHB) funded care as a Third Party Provider.

SIL 25th Anniversary

In 2021 we achieved our 25 year anniversary providing care and support within the community.

2022

SIL won Best Place to Work in Hereford Times Health and Social Care Awards.

Good

SIL is currently rated ‘Good’ by the Quality Care Commission, after its most recent inspection.  The report can be found by clicking the link to the CQC website at the bottom of any page of our website.

Disability Confident Leader

This is recognition of the work we do to challenge attitudes towards disability and how we attract, recruit, and retain disabled workers. We guarantee an interview to disabled applicants meeting the essential job criteria of all vacancies.

Armed Forces Covenant

SIL is delighted to have signed up to the Armed Forces Covenant, pledging to support the employment of veterans and service spouses and partners and offer flexibility during their career with us. We guarantee an interview to all veterans or spouses of service personnel meeting the essential job criteria of all internal vacancies.

Award Winning Care

SIL has been successful at the Hereford Times Health and Social Care Awards, scooping multiple prizes over the past three years. In 2021 and 2022 a SIL support worker became Care Hero of the Year and in 2022 SIL was named as the Best Place to Work in Health & Social Care. Other awards include, Overall Contribution to Care Award in 2020 and in the same year one of our support workers picked up a Health & Social Care Award as well as Carer of the Year at the Sunshine Radio Pride awards.
