Services for Independent Living began as Herefordshire Centre of Independent Living (HCIL) in 1996 when a group of disabled people started campaigning for a pilot Direct Payment scheme in Herefordshire.
Since 1998 it has provided a Direct Payment Support Service and currently supports over 200 people in receipt of direct payments.
In 2004 we established our home support agency, called Independent Living at Home.
We added the SIL homecare team in 2019, they focus more on shorter domiciliary care visits. As an already established agency in Leominster they were a great addition to our team.
We employ over 90 support workers and have 20 office based staff working in our Leominster office, or from home.
SIL is currently rated 'Good' by the Quality Care Commission, after its most recent inspection. The report can be found by clicking the link to the CQC website at the bottom of any page of our website.
Disability Confident Leader
SIL is the only organisation in Herefordshire which has been awarded the Disability Confident Leader status. This is in recognition of the work we do to challenge attitudes towards disability and how we attract, recruit, and retain disabled workers. We guarantee an interview to disabled applicants meeting the essential job criteria of all internal vacancies.
SIL is delighted to have signed up to the Armed Forces Covenant, pledging to support the employment of veterans and service spouses and partners and offer flexibility during their career with us. We guarantee an interview to all veterans or spouses of service personnel meeting the essential job criteria of all internal vacancies.
SIL has been successful at the Hereford Times Health and Social Care Awards, scoping multiple prizes over the past three years including the Overall Contribution to Care Award in 2020. One of our support workers picked up a HTHSC Award in 2020 as well as Carer of the Year at the Sunshine Radio Pride awards.
