Services for Independent Living (SIL) is a local Social Enterprise and has provided Direct Payment Support Services in Herefordshire since 1998. Our extensive experience and the fact that we are a local, non-profit making organisation, make us unique amongst the Direct Payment Support Organisations in Herefordshire.
If you receive a Direct Payment from Herefordshire Council your Direct Payment includes the money to buy the support you require to manage your Direct Payment effectively.
The Direct Payment support services SIL offers in Herefordshire include an initial support and advice meeting for people thinking about taking a Direct Payment. This meeting is free of charge, usually a face to face and includes making people aware of:
- Their options for managing their Direct Payment.
- The benefits of employing staff directly or using an agency
- The responsibilities involved in employing staff directly
- Legal requirements
- The need for contingency planning
- Monitoring requirements
- Other support available (Payroll services, Bookkeeping services, Managed Accounts, Advocacy)
For people who use their Direct Payment to employ their own staff, SIL offers a monthly Direct Payment Support Service Contract which includes the following services:
- Employment law advice and guidance
- Recruitment Support (Developing job descriptions, advertising, interviewing)
- Support with employment contracts
- Identifying training for Personal Assistants
- Support with grievances and disciplinary action
- Support to set up employers' liability insurance
- Health and Safety advice
- Access to detailed guidance and factsheets relating to Direct Payments
- Regular SIL Bulletin highlighting changes in legislation and topics that are relevant to people receiving Direct Payments
- An annual review
We offer coaching and support to develop your skills and confidence in relation to employing your own staff and managing your Direct Payment.
We provide all new employers with a ‘Guide to Employing your PA’ which will be given to you in hard copy or disc depending on your needs. We can also send it via email or in large print. Talk to your advisor about alternative formats.
Our Direct Payment Advisors have many years of experience working with people who receive Direct Payments. Their extensive knowledge means that they can provide professional advice and guidance quickly and effectively, helping you to get the best from your Direct Payment.
In order to help reduce the challenges faced for the person receiving a Direct Payment, we also offer the Bookkeeping Service and Payroll services to support people with the requirements of employing staff and managing their Direct Payment. NB: Direct Payments for Healthcare are currently being introduced - if you are assessed as needing NHS Continuing Health Care you currently have the right to ask for a Direct Payment. SIL are working with Herefordshire CCG to develop the support services required in Herefordshire.
