The government has commissioned the Casey Review of adult social care, led by Dame Louise Casey. On Friday, December 12th, we at Services for Independent Living (SIL) had the honour of welcoming the Review Team to our organisation. We are proud to be the only provider in Herefordshire chosen for a visit, thanks to the recommendation of Ellie Chowns MP.
Welcoming the Casey Review Team
Our CEO, Euan McPherson, introduced the team to staff before we split into two groups of frontline staff and managers. Their honesty, passion, and commitment to care shone through during the discussions.
Key Issues Raised During the Visit
The Review Team asked staff what improvements could be made in adult social care. The responses highlighted several pressing issues:
Commitment Despite Challenges: When asked why they continue in the role despite difficulties, staff spoke movingly about their relationships with service users. Homecare staff emphasised that they are often the only people some service users see. One support worker shared how a long-term service user calls him “grandpa,” a moment that deeply moved everyone present.
Wages and Pay Rates: Staff consistently stressed that low wages remain the biggest challenge for care workers.
Travel Costs and Motoring: Many explained that the cost of travel and maintaining a reliable car is unaffordable on current wages. A government-supported scheme for transport would make a huge difference.
Feedback From the Casey Review Team
At the end of the visit, the Lead Director praised our professionalism and dedication, noting how clearly the positive culture of our staff came across.
We also provided the Review Team with a letter to take back to Dame Louise Casey, outlining the main issues faced by adult social care providers.
Appreciation From Ellie Chowns MP
Following the visit, Ellie Chowns MP for North Herefordshire, contacted Euan to express her gratitude:
“Very many thanks for hosting me and my staff and the Casey Commission on Friday – hugely appreciated! Please pass on my thanks especially to all the SIL team members, trustees and clients who gave up their time to speak to the Casey Commission – it was so valuable. I’ll keep you posted on my ongoing work on social care.”
