Dementia Action Week: Raising Awareness of a Devasting Condition

From the 19th to the 25th of May, Dementia Action Week takes centre stage as an annual awareness campaign led by Alzheimer’s Society. Across the UK, individuals and organizations unite to inspire action on dementia, and this year, the spotlight is on a critical aspect: diagnosis.

Dementia, often misunderstood, affects millions of lives and families, yet recognizing its signs early can make a profound difference. While everyone’s experience with dementia is unique, there are several common early symptoms to watch out for:

  • Memory loss: Struggling to recall recent events.
  • Difficulty concentrating, planning, or organizing: Challenges in solving problems, making decisions, or even following steps in tasks like cooking.
  • Language and communication problems: Trouble following conversations or finding the right words.
  • Perception issues: Misjudging distances, misinterpreting patterns or reflections, or struggling with spatial awareness (e.g., navigating stairs).
  • Confusion about time and place: Losing track of dates, times, or locations.
  • Mood and personality changes: Increased anxiety, irritability, sadness, or withdrawal from activities previously enjoyed.

Mental lapse or dementia?

While natural ageing brings occasional memory lapses or mental changes, dementia is not a normal part of growing older. For someone with dementia, these symptoms go beyond minor forgetfulness—they significantly interfere with daily life, whether at home, in the community, or at work. A professional diagnosis is essential for understanding and addressing these challenges.

If you’re worried about yourself or someone you care about, knowledge is power. Visit Alzheimer’s Society’s website to learn more about symptoms, diagnosis, and how you can take the first steps toward clarity and support.

Dementia Action Week reminds us that timely action can change lives. Let’s work together to spread awareness, recognize the signs, and break down the stigma surrounding dementia.
